The fundamental principle underlying the whole Course - theory and practice running in parallel lines throughout - remains unaltered. The order of the Lessons, too, and the colloquial character of the Exercises, having now stood successfully the severe test of twelve years' practical work in hundreds of classrooms, have been left untouched. In those few points of detail, however, where the subject-matter clearly seemed to call for more careful and lucid exposition, the pruning hook has been applied with unsparing hand. The Appendices have been considerably enlarged - not because it is deemed expedient to burden the pupil's memory with long lists of unusual words (many of which will not be wanted in a lifetime) - but in order to meet the wants of students who have to stand the ordeal of captious Examinations.' So long as a candidate's efficiency will be gauged by the sheer memory work of cut DEGREESand-dried strings of words and phrases, rather than by a clear understanding of fundamental principles, the Compiler has no alternative but to submit under protest to the stern economic law of "supply and demand."
